A diagnostic assessment is often the first step in behavioral health treatment.
During the assessment, a qualified clinician spends time learning about the concerns that brought the individual to MVGC and gathering information needed to make appropriate treatment recommendations.
The assessment may include current symptoms and concerns, mental health history, medical history, medications, substance use history when applicable, family and social history, strengths, needs, functioning, safety concerns, previous treatment, and personal treatment goals.
When appropriate, the clinician may establish or update a behavioral health diagnosis.
The assessment is then used to recommend services that best address the individual’s needs.
Recommendations may include outpatient therapy, psychiatric services, case management, substance use treatment, group treatment, community resources, or other supports.
What Happens Next?
Completing an assessment does not mean every client will receive the same services.
The assessment helps MVGC match each person with the level and type of care that is clinically appropriate.
