Question. Persuade. Refer.
QPR – Question, Persuade, Refer is an evidence-based suicide prevention training designed to give individuals the knowledge and confidence to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and connect someone with help.
Much like CPR prepares people to respond to a medical emergency, QPR teaches practical skills that can help someone respond when a person may be considering suicide.
What Does QPR Teach?
QPR focuses on three simple but important steps:
QUESTION
Learn how to recognize warning signs and ask someone directly if they are thinking about suicide.
PERSUADE
Learn how to listen, offer hope, and encourage someone to accept help.
REFER
Learn how to connect someone with appropriate professional and community resources.
Who Should Take QPR?
You do not need to be a mental health professional to make a difference. QPR is designed for anyone who wants to be better prepared to help someone experiencing a suicide crisis.
Training can benefit:
- Schools and educators
- Businesses and workplaces
- Community organizations
- Faith-based organizations
- First responders
- Healthcare and social service professionals
- Parents and caregivers
- Coaches and youth-serving organizations
- Community members
Become a QPR Gatekeeper
Individuals who complete QPR training become QPR Gatekeepers—people who are prepared to recognize potential warning signs, start an important conversation, and help connect someone with appropriate support.
The goal is not to turn participants into counselors or clinicians. Instead, QPR provides everyday people with the tools to recognize when someone may need help and know what to do next.
